How do I type an `@` (at sign) symbol?

Solution 1

Make sure you selected the right keyboard layout. Go to System Settings, click on Keyboard Layout. On the Layout tab you should see a + button. Select the most appropriate keyboard layout as shown bellow.

keyboard layout dialog box

I am not using a Macbook, but the first layout worked as you described to type @. I suppose you are using Ubuntu 11.10.

Solution 2

In Ubuntu 14.04

System Settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Typing And define the "Alternative Character Key" I used Right Ctrl Key.

Combine this key with Q or 2.

Result: @

Solution 3

Ctrl+Shift+U+40 would do the trick!

Solution 4

With Ubuntu 12.04 on a Macbook Danish keyboard, I get the @ sign with the right Alt+2. It doesn't work with the left alt key as normally on the Mac.

Solution 5

In Ubuntu 16.04 one can choose from two English keyboard layouts by clicking on En1 or En2 at the top right corner of the screen.
@character can be obtained in the standard way shift + 2 by choosing En2 layout, which is the US English layout.

I have Ubuntu on my MacBook 2007 with a Spanish keyboard, on MacOS the @-sign was typed using Alt (Option) + 2, but on Ubuntu I have no idea. I have to copy and paste it every time. How do I type an at sign?

same problem here and no solution so far. the (at) @, tilde (~) and brackets [] to mention just a few also don´t work for me on an earlier mbp.

And in the Portuguese keyboard in Windows you do Ctrl+Alt+2 but in Ubuntu that = nothing.

YES! finally. the alt key was somehow just disabled, preventing any character other than letter or shift+key characters to be written...

Why -1? This is UNICODE, it works great.
