Laptop battery always discharging

Question

I have a fully up to date Ubuntu 14.04 on my Asus X550DP laptop. My problem is that the battery is always discharging. When I plug the AC adapter in, it charges battery up to around 96% and stops charging there, but the power management tool says that my battery is in use and is discharging. What is the problem?

Open a terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T

 upower --dump

and it will show you the real output

A laptop battery is a rechargeable lithium ion battery after a certain time period of use (between 1 and 6 years depending on usage) it looses its capacity to charge and can not reach the energy design in your case 43.0WH and shows as full at 38.4WH...But if your battery is New then You can manually calibrate your battery (full discharge) method .

1. Fully charge the battery to its maximum capacity (100%);
2. Let the battery "rest" fully charged for 2 hours or more in order to cool down from the charging process. You may use the computer normally within this period;

3. Unplug the power cord and set the computer to hibernate automatically .

4. Leave the computer discharging, non-stop, until it hibernates itself. You may use the computer normally within this period;

5. When the computer shuts down completely, let it stay in the hibernation state for 5 hours or even more;

6. Plug the computer to the A/C power to perform a full charge non-stop until its maximum capacity (100%). You may use the computer normally within this period.

Solution 2

Do you still have the problem? You may try to recalibrate your battery. Just follow the steps described here under the paragraph "How to Manually Calibrate a Battery". The process itself works equal with Ubuntu.

The real output shows that the battery is full, dischargin and the supply is on. terminal screenshot

@KedvesHunor it shows your battery has lost its capacity charge to 84% means depreciated almost 25% of battery life cycle.
