The Calibri font on Ubuntu

Multiple issues are described in the question and comments. This answer summarizes them and points toward resources that may be helpful.

  1. Possible reasons for 'wrong' fonts being displayed include:

    • Forgetting to update the font cache with fc-cache -f after installing the font.

    • Not having actually installed the font. For instance, by copying files to a wrong location.

  2. Metric-Compatible Fonts are fonts that may used in place of each other without changing layout and pagination.

    • The font displayed in Ubuntu is Carlito, which is a substitute for Calibri. It is part of Google's Chrome OS Extra Fonts (Crosextra). The other font in the collection is Caladea, which replaces Cambria.

    • Google has another collection of fonts, Chrome OS Core Fonts (Croscore), which contains Tinos (for Times New Roman), Arimo (for Arial), and Cousine (for Courier New).

    • Some other Google-sponsored substitutes are available, such as Gelasio (for Georgia).

  3. Combinations of letters (particularly f, i, t) that are merged together when rendered are known as ligatures. In print, ligatures are considered desirable. However, people are not used to seeing ligatures because their primary exposure to text is now via web browsers, which don't even bother to attempt to follow any of the typographic conventions that have developed over centuries.

The following pages may be helpful toward finding an acceptable way to avoid ligatures:

  4. In one of the images, antialiasing appears to have been turned off. Antialiasing improves the appearance of shapes drawn on an imperfectly matched grid. If turning on antialiasing in system settings does not fix the problem, then the problem may be associated with the use of embedded bitmap fonts.

I copied the .ttf files of Calibri on a Windows installation to my Ubuntu into the folder .fonts to get Calibri on Ubuntu. It gave me a font very similar to Calibri on Windows, but not quite the same.

enter image description here enter image description here enter image description here enter image description here

[font size is the same, large=Ubuntu, small=Windows]

The ugliest is, of course, the typesetting of ti. Does anybody know how to get Calibri working on Ubuntu correctly?

The result of fc-match -v Calibri is:

UPDATE: If I select Calibri in gedit, some pairs of characters, especially the ones starting with an f or a t appear differently:

    enter image description here

SOLVED: this was an unrelated problem due to antialiasing.

UPDATE 2: This behaviour is still a mystery to me:

The core fonts do not include Calibri so that approach won't work. Did you refresh the font cache after copying the TTF file?
    • Carucel
      Carucel about 7 years
Yes, sudo fc-cache -fv must be called after installing the fonts.

Please update your question with the output of fc-match -v Calibri.

Sorry, I updated the correct output. [I had deleted the Calibri font temporarilarly from my .fonts, now the output is correct], but the Calibri on my Ubuntu is thus not exactly equal to the one on Windows.

Did you close any program trying to access the font after installing it? For instance, if you opened LibreOffice before installing Calibri, it won't work until you restart that program.
    • Carucel
      Carucel about 7 years
Yes. I also rebooted. The font is very similar though, so I think it must already use the Calibri ttf files, but not quite the same. Especially the typesetting of ti is very strange.

Do you also have the Caladea and Carlito fonts installed?
    • Carucel
      Carucel about 7 years
@AndreaLazzarotto, Yes, Caladea is in my latex installation folder, not selectable in LibreOffice, Carlito was in my .fonts but removing it does not change anything.

I see in your second screenshot that apparently antialiasing is not working correctly. Did you disable it for small font sizes?
    • Carucel
      Carucel about 7 years
@AndreaLazzarotto, You were right, this behaviour was unrelated, this showed me how to fix the antialiasing. It did not unfortunately solve the problem of connecting ti.

Those are ligatures and are a (desirable) feature of many OpenType and TrueType fonts (most of them, actually). I think they can be disabled somehow, I just never tried to figure out how...

BTW if you solved the problem please consider writing a self answer and explain what you did. ;)

@AndreaLazzarotto, Thank you very much for your help. However, I didn't solve the strange typesetting of ti yet, I think it has to do with ligatures as you said, but I am not sure how to get them correct to have the exact same font in Ubuntu as in Windows.
