Unable to start gnome-terminal via VNC:
Solution 1
Are you exporting your display server?
Also, try putting your gnome-settings-daemon first and add gnome-terminal to your vnc startup and see if that gets it to start on reboot.
Solution 2
Finally, it worked.
What I did was to run the following commands (I'm not 100% sure that this is a solution):
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop gnome-panel gnome-settings-daemon metacity nautilus gnome-terminal
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I use Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS (the machine is actually a VM that runs on VMware ESXi) and my VNC .xstartup file contains the following lines:
#!/bin/sh gnome-panel & gnome-settings-daemon & metacity & nautilus &
When I connect to my desktop over VNC with the following command, I cannot open a terminal session in my VNC session:
vncserver :36 -geometry 1920x1080 -depth 16 -pixelformat rgb565
The following is the corresponding log file of my VNC session:

Everything was fine until yesterday and there was no such an issue. I tried to reboot the VM and also the hypervisor but it didn't work. How can I fix this issue?
This is an example on what I see via my VNC client.

yildizabdullah over 4 yearsWhat should I do to export my display server?
-
nathanel.titane over 4 yearsyou would normally add export DISPLAY=:1 to your session script or bashrc - :1 assumes your display sockets are free and unused - it may throw an error if other sessions have been started prior and have not been killed or purged.
-
yildizabdullah over 4 yearsI've updated my post and added a screenshot of my VNC session. Could you please take a look at it?
-
nathanel.titane over 4 yearsok, so from what i gather, your session is running - dis you even install gnome-terminal?
-
yildizabdullah over 4 yearsYes, I did install gnome-terminal.
-
nathanel.titane over 4 yearswould you mind testing with an alternate terminal emulator? xterm or whatnot see what that does? it may be an issue with dpkg or the update-alternatives setting. when you manually install packages, not all hooks or dependencies are setup the way a *desktop meta-package would handle them.
-
yildizabdullah over 4 yearsActually, there is no menu item for any terminal application under Applications. What I did previously was to right-click inside a folder and then click on Open in Terminal item, and now, it does not work.
