vsftp configuration issue

Question

i have installed vsftpd in my local mechine ubuntu 10.04 also in remote server ubuntu 12.04

i have done same configuration for both of the mechines. but in server when user logs in

usging ftp client he can view all directory including root,etc,var .... i would like to

show only his home directory , following is my vsftpd configuration. kindly advise.

chroot_local_user=YES

You can also limit a specific list of users to just their home directories:

chroot_list_enable=YES
chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd.chroot_list

After uncommenting the above options, create a /etc/vsftpd.chroot_list containing a list of users one per line. Then restart vsftpd:

sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart

@johnkor : hi , i have installed vsftp in my local server 10.04 but in that i dont have to create a chroot_list_file all the users are created are restricted to there home directory. kindly advise why it is not happening in ubuntu 12.04

I don't really have an answer, but they may have changed it to require a list of users in the new versions to enhance security.

@hohnkor: To jail/chroot users (not the vsftpd service), there are three choices. Search for "chroot_local_users" on the file and consider one of the following: Code: # 1. All users are jailed by default: chroot_local_user=YES chroot_list_enable=NO # 2. Just some users are jailed: chroot_local_user=NO chroot_list_enable=YES # Create the file /etc/vsftpd.chroot_list with a list of the jailed users. # 3. Just some users are "free": chroot_local_user=YES chroot_list_enable=YES # Create the file /etc/vsftpd.chroot_list with a list of the "free" users.
