What version of Ubuntu 11.10 should I prefer? 64bit or 32bit?

Solution 1

The simple 'rule of thumb' is that if you have >=4Gb RAM and a 64-bit capable processor then you should install 64-bit OS.

Solution 2

Ubuntu 11.10 has multiarch support and you shouldn't really have a problem running into software that won't work under 64-bit. I'd recommend the 64-bit variety so you can get the most out of your hardware.

Solution 3

install 64 bit version and use this command to install 32 bit libraries,so that you dont have any problem running 32bit software..

apt-get install ia32-libs

As far as I know, some software do not support 64 bit OS. What about this?

The specifications for the processor indicate that it is indeed 64-bit, although you are right that you could still run a 32-bit OS on it.

Right, but the processor the OP has is a 64-bit processor. Therefore, he could run either a 32-bit or 64-bit OS on there just fine. If it was a 32-bit processor, then he could only run a 32-bit OS, but that is not the case.
