Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version 1607 fails to install KB3176938 with 0x800F0922
The last way to repair a Windows is called Repair Install/Inplace Upgrade.
Download the 1607 ISO, mount the ISO via double click on the ISO. Now navigate to the virtual DVD drive, run setup.exe
and select to keep all applications/settings
This repairs Windows and should fix this issue.

So this is a Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version 1607 system, Insider edition on a slow ring. Some days ago it was repeatedly failing
KB3176934
with the same0x800F0922
. I didn't find out the root cause and how to prevent it. My purpose is to find other who has exactly this same problem and figure out a solution. If someone already has a solution - even better.Looking at the CBS directory, back from 08/26/2016 when the
KB3176934
was failing I see a 22GB (!) log file. It seems like that there was "some" deadlock:... 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info CBS Session: 30539793_3012262845 initialized by client WindowsUpdateAgent, external staging directory: (null), external registry directory: (null 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info CBS Opened cabinet package, package directory: \\?\C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\3717a62e3772d26d381fa9aea49eed42\, sandbox location: \\?\C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\3717a62e3772d26d381fa9aea49eed42\, cabinet location: \\?\C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\3717a62e3772d26d381fa9aea49eed42\Windows10.0-KB3176934-x64-EXPRESS.cab, manifest location: \\?\C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\3717a62e3772d26d381fa9aea49eed42\update.mum 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info DPX Started DPX phase: Resume and Download Job 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info DPX Started DPX phase: Apply Deltas Provided In File 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info DPX Ended DPX phase: Apply Deltas Provided In File 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info DPX Started DPX phase: Apply Deltas Provided In File 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info DPX Ended DPX phase: Apply Deltas Provided In File 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info DPX CJob::Resume completed with status: 0x0 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info DPX Ended DPX phase: Resume and Download Job 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info CBS Exec: Asynchrous operation, session completes later 2016-08-26 20:18:37, Info CBS Lock: Error found, inverse lock order, current lock held: CCbsExecutionCommunication, level: 130, lock attempted: CCbsWorkerQueue, level: 60. KB3176938
is always in the "installed and restart needed" phase, so I'm not able to install other things? Just guessing...Trying to force install the KB3176938 after manually downloaded the
CAB
file.
Manually installing KB3176938 form a manually downloaded cabinet was not successful either. I was thinking maybe to start the install from safe mode, but the error comes really at the end of the install procedure, the computer restarted and again went to almost 100% progress. I feel like I'm in a 22-catch situation. First I'd like to stop the windows update from forcing this update.
See answer. After the repair with
Windows10_InsiderPreview_Client_x64_en-us_14393.iso
I got KB3176934 and a couple of more updates. Seems to work fine now. Looking back, maybe at some point I did (or the system offered?) the anniversary update? Maybe that's not a good idea for an Insider Win10.-

Csaba Toth over 7 yearsSince the incident above I got into another update revert loop around the beginning of October. After a week of agony a user discovered that it was caused by an Xbox service. Note, that I don't have an Xbox. Microsoft prepared an installer for the registry fix for that problem. The installer only worked for the second try but solved the problem.

Windows10_InsiderPreview_Client_x64_en-us_14393.iso
and this brought me to14393.105
