Arch: Awesome Window Manager won't start

6,597

I don't think DBUS is necessary for startup, but that's the only significant difference from my working .xinitrc:

source /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/30-dbus

Otherwise, you might want to change the last code line to this, as @Gilles suggested:

exec awesome > ~/.xsession.log 2>&1

Then, when the execution fails, press Ctrl-Alt-F1, log in, and inspect ~/.xsession.log for any error messages. Most likely there's a missing package...

I can't get my awesome running. I installed awesome and all dependecies with pacman and followed the beginning of the following guide to get awesome running:

    http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/My_first_awesome

Whenever I startx the screen turns black for a second and then X-Server "shuts down successfully" -.- When I sudo startx the ugly Test Session shows up as mentioned here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide#Install_X

    version:

    awesome v3.5.1 (Ruby Tuesday)
     • Build: Sep 25 2013 21:14:10 for i686 by gcc version 4.8.1 (nobody@)
     • Compiled against Lua 5.2.2 (running with Lua 5.2)
     • D-Bus support: ✔

    my xinitrc:

    #!/bin/sh
    #
    # ~/.xinitrc

    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then

Does it work without a rc.lua? What do you get on the console before the “shut down successfully” message (it may help to redirect output to a file with exec >~/.xsession.log 2>&1)?

If you read to the end of the log file, the X server starts successfully, suggesting the problem is with their Awesome configuration.
