Cannot ssh with shared keys on CentOS 7 server refused our key
Solution 1
From comments:
Do you have your authentication public key in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and do this file and parent folder have proper permissions and SELinux labels?
The .ssh
folder needs to have permissions 700
(not readable by others).
chmod 700 ~/.ssh/
chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
Solution 2
Following the advice of @Jakuje, I checked the logs after turning LogLevel
from INFO
to DEBUG3
in sshd_config
and the problem was simply a permission issue with the user directory : Authentication refused: bad ownership or modes for directory /home/user

I cannot ssh to a CentOS 7 server using pre-shared keys, I get a "server refused our key" message. Below is an ssh attempt using -vv

I have been managing few other servers and I've never had such an issue. I precise that directories/files permissions look ok. I compared
/etc/ssh/sshd_config
with another server running Fedora 23 where I can connect with no problem using shared keys and the only difference I see with the CentOS is about the HostKey setting :Fedora 23 (working)
HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ed25519_key
CentOS (not working)
HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ecdsa_key HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ed25519_key
I tend not experimenting to much with sshd config as I don't want to lock me out of the machine.
Any hint? Thanks

Jakuje almost 8 yearsDo you have your authentication public key in
~/.ssh/authorized_keys
and do this file and parent folder have proper permissions and SELinux labels? -
feub almost 8 years@Jakuje yes the public key is in
~/.ssh/authorized_keys
with the correct permission (600). I have SELinux disabled -
Jakuje almost 8 yearsAnd the private key is
/home/user/.ssh/id_rsa
? It is rejected. Turn on verbose logging on the server (LogLevel DEBUG3
insshd_config
), restartsshd
, try to connect and you will see why the key was rejected. -
feub almost 8 yearsThank you a lot @Jakuje, indeed it was a permission issue, but not on the keys or even on the
.ssh
directory, but on the home directory itself :Authentication refused: bad ownership or modes for directory /home/user
that was with 770
