Disable laptop screen when lid is closed

Question

I'm on a Lenovo Y50, running Windows 10.

I have an external monitor attached (HDMI) and I use the laptop screen as well as the external. Sometimes I want to close the laptop lid and just use the one screen. When I close the laptop lid, the screen turns off, but Windows still thinks of it as a valid display, and as such, doesn't move my windows and stuff from the laptop screen to the external screen. Every other laptop I've had has disabled the laptop screen on closing the lid, thus making the OS behave as if there's only one display connected.

This is particularly annoying because I'd like to be able to move my mouse to the edges of the screen without it moving off into another screen that I can't see because the laptop lid is closed.

Is this a problem I can solve? I'd like the laptop to let the OS know that the display has been disabled when the laptop lid is closed.

Solution 1

1. Launch Presentation Display Mode with Win + P

   Select "Second screen only"

2. Got to Control Panel > Power Options > Change what closing the lid does

   Set 'What happens when lid is closed' to 'Do nothing'

My Setup

• (1) Laptop (Win10 Home)
• (2) LCD Monitors

Need

• Output to both displays with laptop closed and laptop-display off

Steps

• Open Settings->Display ('Change Display Settings')

• Identify which display you'd like to disable (#1 for me)

• Select display (tap on #1)

• Scroll down to 'Multiple displays', set to 'Disconnect this display' & Confirm

Here is how to confirm, Settings will show greyed out if off -

• With Laptop Display Enabled
• With Laptop Display Disabled

Solution 3

This will be sort of an addendum to J-Dizzle's answer I'm making because I couldn't find the 'Disconnect this display' option in the last step.

The only real difference is ensuring your laptop monitor is not your main display before trying to disconnect it. Perhaps this is common sense, but it took me a while to figure out. Big thanks and credit to J-Dizzle for his answer though!

My Setup

• Windows 10
• Two LCD Monitors

Need

• Output to both displays with laptop closed and laptop display off
• Continue to have the laptop display off when I wake my laptop from sleep

Steps

1. Open 'Change Display Settings' (search for that in the start menu or right click the desktop and click 'Display Settings')
2. Open your laptop lid
3. Identify which monitor is your laptop monitor (#1 for me when laptop is open)
4. Select one of the monitor displays (#2 and #3 for me)
5. Scroll down and click 'Make this my main display'
6. Select your laptop display (#1 for me)
7. Scroll down to the 'Multiple displays' dropdown menu and click 'Disconnect this display'

Here is how to confirm, Settings will show greyed out if off -

Is it possible your computer's has a broken sensor for detecting the lid being closed? Try setting the power plan to go to sleep when closing the lid, then close it and see what happens.

No, the screen definitely turns off when I close the lid, but the OS doesn't stop treating it as a working display.

Win+P did the job. It shows the second monitor only when hdmi plugged in, and shows the main monitor when hdmi removed.

Your recommendation seems counter intuitive. Can you provide an explanation as to how this setting will result in Windows disabling the display when the lid is closed?

Basically you need to set "Do nothing" under the Power settings. You need to go to Control Panel and then go to Power Option. The screen you get will have option to set the preference for the laptop lid closed option.

Do Nothing tells Windows not to do things, such as sleep, hibernate, etc. It's also not going to disable the display, which is what the OP wants to happen.

This doesn't work if you have two external displays and want the built-in display to turn off. If you have two external displays, "Second Screen Only" shuts down one of the externals as well as the built-in.

Ah, one major downside with this. When you disconnect your external monitors and open the laptop lid, the laptop display is still disabled.

This worked for me using Windows 10 1903 and two external monitors. Win-p, show second screen only left the two externals running. One is connected via HDMI, and the other with a USB HDMI adapter.

"Disconnect this display" would not be in the drop-down options if the laptop display is the main display, first choose another monitor and make it MAIN DISPLAY, then go to laptop display and choose "Disconnect this display"
