How do I access the host's hard drive in VMware?

Solution 1

What you want is to set up a shared folder with your host OS. In order to do this, you must first have VMWare Tools installed.

  • In the VM settings under shared folders, click Add and follow the on-screen prompts:

When you're done, your share will show up under the /mount/hgfs directory.

Solution 2

One option is to share the files on the host that you want to access from VM, and then access them from the guest OS via the network, or by mounting the shared folder in Linux with "smbmount".

Here's some help on this from VMWare ("Sharing Files Between Guest and Host Operating Systems").

I have a Windows 7 host machine. My VMware player is running Ubuntu 10.10.

I want to access my main C:\ in Ubuntu to be able to access all my files.

I have tried: "Edit virtual machine settings" > Hardware > Add > Hard Disk > Use Physical disk > Use entire disk > Finish*.

+1 or mount.cifs :) This is a better solution than the vmware utils one because it deals with a method on how to do this with ALL VM software suites and not just VMWare. Easy enough to do this with VirtualBox, VMWare and even QEMU.

This initially didn't work for me with Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS 64-bit and VMWare 4.04. VMWare tools was installed during VM creation, but the shared folders module didn't seem to be present (howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/…). When I manually re-installed VMWare tools then it all worked fine.

@DNA I find that I have to re install VMWare tools frequently with VMWare player.
