How to properly configure xstartup file for TightVNC with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS GNOME environment

It's working now. (But the icons on the upper right corner of the top bar are still missing.)

All I did was uninstall the Anaconda version of 'dbus'.

Here's my .vnc/startup:

Solution 2

  • XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP should be GNOME-Flashback:GNOME.
  • You also need to install gnome-flashback.
  • gnome-settings-daemon does not exist, remove it.
  • Remove also gnome-panel and metacity, will be started by gnome-session.

    I'm trying to configure Gnome-Desktop on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

    I'm able to view the desktop with Real VNC Viewer, Apple VNC Screen Share and other VNC viewers, I can run my applications, the desktop manager works, copy/paste works within the server, etc.

    However, the background is gray (no wallpaper), the icons are missing (e.g. clock, audio, etc.), copy/paste does not work between the client and server, right click doesn't work.

    Here's what I installed:

    Sorry, from posted logs it is not clear what is causing problem. Did you install gnome-flashback? Can you login in GNOME Flashback (Metacity) session without vnc?

    Needed indicators are started by systemd... Try without --builtin! Or alternatively start indicators manually with systemctl --user start indicator-application. Other indicators are indicator-bluetooth, indicator-datetime, indicator-keyboard, indicator-messages, indicator-power, indicator-printers, indicator-session, indicator-sound.

    your log file had vncconfig: not found. Maybe use full path to it, if it is installed? Sorry can not help more - I don't know how copy/paste works in vnc and what vncconfig do.

    I'm using tightvnc. Googl'ing tighvnc and copy / paste shows many discussions of the issue. tigervnc has 'vncconfig'. It appears that tightvnc hasn't resolved copy / paste between the VNC client and server.

    I ran 'systemctl --user start indicator-application' on all the indicators you listed. An email icon appeared, but none of the other ones. Nothing in journalctl. Nothing in /home/ubuntu/.vnc/ip-10-0-1-82:1.log that seems relevant.

    gnome-shell doesn't work with tightvnc. gnome-shell requires XKEYBOARD extension, which tightvnc does not support. tigervnc offers encryption and gnome-shell works, however, I am getting weird connection errors on the ssh tunnel (e.g. -channel 2: open failed: connect failed: Connection timed out).
